Silver Diamine Fluoride or 38% SDF solution is a liquid that is placed on an active cavity.

It is painless and can be placed very easily for most patients.  In some cases, it can arrest or stop the progress of the decay.  The silver works as an antimicrobial and the fluoride helps to re-mineralize the tooth structure.  It can be a great benefit to stop the disease process and this benefit can be used to delay treatment until the patient is older and more cooperative for dental treatment.  The major disadvantage of SDF is that it permanently stains the cavity black.  It also doesn’t restore form or function and a restoration may still be needed in the future.

We are happy discuss SDF more if it we think it will help your child.
